This weekend I journeyed up to NYC to play with my friends. I got there a little early because as I discussed in yesterday’s post, I like wandering alone in big cities with coffee.
My favorite thing is discovering new coffee shops. I’m a big fan of Foursquare when I’m exploring cities and it lead me to this charming spot: Grounded in the West Village.
So cool inside! I want my apartment to look like this. I had to try their “outrageous cookie” with an iced spiced soy latte. (say that 5 times fast) And you’ll probably laugh or judge but after walking another hour or so I had to go to Gimme in Soho… I haven’t been to any coffee shops since I last went to NYC a few weeks ago sooo I figured I had a quota to fill.
The day was comfortably chilly so it was the perfect excuse for a soy latte. As beautiful and delicious as ever.
When we finally met up we stopped for beers (I ordered a cider) at this little bar complete with a bluegrass band and adorable flowers on the table. From Soho we walked to Brooklyn and found ourselves at the coolest little Mexican restaurant: Gran Electrica. Guac! (Duh) I also had the fish tacos, a personal fave. We had all been craving a good margarita since National Tequila day last week and we were definitely in luck. I had a carrot ginger margarita (when I see ginger it’s almost always my go-to) We enjoyed some cocktails at another bar in Dumbo called Atrium (excellent moscow mule) and walked through the Brooklyn Bridge park. That night in a true treat-yo-self fashion we wandered back to the West Village for ice cream from Big Gay Ice Cream. Speculous soft serve with hot fudge? Yup, it happened. But I was too eager to take any pictures. The next morning our quest was simple and pure: a kick ass brunch. It took us trying 3 different places (brunch at noon on the lower east side is quite a hoopla) and finally found this lovely little place (thanks Foursquare) called Smile. If you’re ever in the neighborhood I HIGHLY recommend. A delightful brunch experience with some of my other wonderful NYC friends. Because I knew I was going to have plenty more coffee I opted for a basil lemonade because well basil lemonade. We’re all instagram addicts and Fran’s macchiato was too cute not to be snapped. Fran and I both got fresh peaches with rosemary honey and housemade ricotta. We also both had scones because BRUNCH. It was fresh, light but creamy and oh so satisfying. I was pretty spoiled by Fran for my birthday. She got me coffee, an adorable mug, a mason jar cup (not pictured) and my favorite: a wooden hedgehog (my spirit animal) necklace. It was such a delightful weeekend, but I’m excited for my work this week which includes a lot of recipe development and photography for Bai’s relaunched blog.
I also came home to a happy suprise. My first ever Whimsybox which is a craft subscription box. I can’t wait to make the clay bead necklace! It’s one of my favorite kinds of crafts so I really lucked out.
- Do you like wandering alone or does it freak you out?
- Brunch: savory or sweet?
