Enjoy this spicy, refreshing Moscow Mule without the extra sugar. This will quickly become your happy hour staple.
I’d have to say on the whole I’m not your “typical” 20-something. I’m kind of dorky, a bit of a hippy, not super girly or into being “cute” and not a big fan of being surrounded by people I don’t know {read: introvert}. Aka you’d probably never find me in a club with heels and a tight dress.
I’d much rather find some cute hipster-ish bar where I’m likely wearing my favorite jeans and I can actually see and hear the person I’m with. I’m much better at getting into deep meaningful, albeit tipsy conversations, because as an introvert, small talk is kind of the worst.
My favorite cocktail to order: the Moscow Mule. For Dark and Stormy fans you might be familiar with the gist of this, but basically a Moscow mule is part lime, part ginger beer and part vodka. Surprise! My favorite cocktail has ginger in it. God, so predictable, but I swear if you try this drink you’ll understand. It’s sweet and spicy and oh so refreshing. Freakin’ delightful. After one or two maybe I’m not so bad at this small talk thing after all… nah, I still hate it.
This funky little bar in Ithaca used to have an incredible Moscow Mule and my roommate and I would always order them and while we drank them just talk about how good they were. Friends used to complain that the drinks were expensive (like $7) but I can’t imagine what they think of city prices. I once saw a bar that had a happy hour deal for $10 margaritas (how is that a deal… just, how?)
The point is you can make one for way cheaper and healthier too at home. Call over your peeps and best part is you have total control over lighting and music. Boom.
If you’re unfamiliar with Komucha it’s a probiotic, fermented tea. For some it takes a bit of getting used to, but GTS brand has an amazing ginger flavor that tastes a lot like ginger beer, just a little less sweet. You can use any brand of ginger kombucha you want, however I’m most familiar and fond of GTS brand (totally not being paid). If you compare the sugar in a ginger beer (33g) to a bottle of Kombucha (3g) it’s well worth the swap. Plus you’re basically turning your cocktail into a healthy drink so I call this a win!
- 6 oz of ginger kombucha (I used GTS Brand)
- 2 oz of vodka
- 1 tsp of agave (or honey)
- Juice of 1 lime
- Lime for garnish
- Place ice in copper mug
- Combine kombucha, vodka, lime juice and agave & stir
- Garnish with a lime wedge
- Drink your moscow mule #likeaboss

GIRL! Killin it! This is such a great idea to use kombucha! And tell me you’re talking about The Westy bar???
I never make my own mixed drinks or cocktails at home.. I need to branch out! haha. I will definitely be trying this. : ) Have a great weekend, Georgie!
Ahh the Westy! I was thinking of Silkys as I wrote this but I have fond memories of both. Most times I make a virgin version of this, but when friends come over… it’s another story 😉
you are brilliant! LOVE IT
you might get me to try that fermented drink after all! I’m a seasonal cocktail consumer; summer the Mule or margarita work for me, while in the chilly months I prefer a splash ‘o rum or spiced pumpkin vodka(Crop is the brand!) in some hot cider
I drink this exact drink all summer long (minus the agave).
Best cocktail ever!
I’m obsessed with all things ginger!
