Here it is! I’ve been promising this recipe for weeks and drinking it myself for over a month. It’s the Iced Chocolate Elixir. Basically, it’s chocolate plant-based milk filled with tons of goodies. But let’s be real, the most important part is that it tastes delicious.
I’m solidly in the iced drink camp when it comes to anything coffee or tea. I do love my hot pour over coffee in the morning, but after that, I’m almost always drawn towards cold drinks. I’m a slow sipper so I don’t have to worry about the drink getting cold and losing its flavor.
Why I Made This Drink
I created this concoction when I was trying out some different Four Sigmatic products (this post isn’t sponsored by them btw, I’m just a big fan of their hot cacao especially).
The reason I made this drink was to create something delicious that I could also add different nutritional extras to like adaptogens, college, and MTC oil. A lot of people love making bulletproof coffee or adding different adaptogens and collagen to their coffee, but personally, I like to keep my coffee unadulterated. I like it black. Or if I’m getting an iced latte I just want the coffee and oat milk.
But I wanted in on the fun stuff too. Which is where this elixir comes in. It’s a way to make something delicious and also really nutritionally dense. You can also totally customize the recipe based on your own needs.
The Basic How-To
To make an iced elixir latte whether it’s chocolate, matcha or turmeric you create the hot base then add it to plant-based milk over ice. In a blender add all your dry ingredients then add about 2-4 oz of hot (almost) boiling water then blend. This is your “espresso” base. Once you’ve blended your hot water and dry ingredients add in any liquids like vanilla extract, maple syrup, honey etc.
Then add ice to your glass and pour about 6-8 oz of plant milk (or regular milk) to the cup. Then add your base on top and stir with a (metal) straw. Ta-dah! Super simple and really easy to customize.
Thoughts on Mushrooms & Adaptogens
Right now one of the biggest trends in wellness are mushrooms and adaptogens. Well, I guess you can’t really call them trends because both have been used for hundreds of years in different cultures. So let’s just say a western wellness resurgence.
With wellness trends, I always pull out my “healthy skeptic” hat. I like to do some research as well as my own experimentation before I make a judgment either way.
From the reading I’ve done, it sounds like a big part of taking adaptogens and mushrooms are consistency. They aren’t like over the counter medicines that just kick in within hours. Again from reading and talking with friends who are experts, both mushrooms and adaptogens will react differently based on your unique body. I’ve talked with people who are easily jolted by the chaga mushroom whereas they don’t affect me quite so dramatically.
Again my recommendation is always to trust your gut and realize that no one wellness trend (or western resurgence) will be a miracle cure.
My feeling is that the basics like stress management, enough sleep, water, good connections, therapy will always be priorities over an adaptogenic elixir. But if you’re rocking the basics it doesn’t hurt to add something new.
How to Customize Your Iced Chocolate Elixir
I created this drink to allow for modifications. This recipe is a base so feel free to add more or less of any ingredient based on your taste. I personally use the Four Sigmatic hot cacao but feel free to sub that with regular cacao powder.

- 1 Packet of Four Sigmatic Hot Cacao *optional*
- 4 oz of hot water (a little less than boiling)
- 1/2 Tablespoon of Maple Syrup
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
- Pinch of salt (trust me)
- 6 oz of plant-based milk (or dairy)
- A handful of Ice Cubes
- 1 teaspoon of adaptogenic herbs or mushrooms
- I personally love lion’s mane
- MTC Oil
- CBD Oil
- In a blender mix together dry ingredients: cacao powder & any adaptogens or mushrooms
- Then add hot water
- Add maple syrup, vanilla extract & salt
- Blend for 20-30 seconds
- In a glass, add ice and plant milk
