Vega Review: Energizing Smoothie

July 25, 2013 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Yesterday I was cruising through Whole Foods and there was someone from Vega handing out free samples. Snagged a couple among them the Vega Energizing Smoothie.

A.) Love me some free samples.

B.) I’ve been wanting to try Vega anyway because it doesn’t use Whey or Soy protein (but I’ve been a cheap-o college kid.)

So I thought this would be a great chance to review a product.

Bonus: because Vega doesn’t sponsor me in anyway you know my opinions are completely non-bias!

What I Tried:

The chocolate flavor of the Energizing Smoothie

What Was In It:

  • Complete Protein Blend (Pea protein, flax seed protein, SaviSeed (sacha inchi) protein, sprouted whole grain brown rice protein, hemp seed protein), Flax seed, Inulin, Green Blend (Alfalfa grass, spinach leaf, broccoli floret, kale leaf), Digestive Enzyme Blend (Pepzyme AG, HemiSEB (amylase, pectinase, phytase, hemicellulase), natural flavour, xanthan gum, stevia leaf extract. Natural Dutch cocoa, natural chocolate and hazelnut flavours.

Nutritional Highlights:

  • 100 Calories
  • 3 grams of Fat
  • 1 gram of Sugar
  • 11 grams of Protein
  • 7 grams of Fiber
  • No Soy
  • No Whey

So How Was It?

I mixed the packet in 10 oz of water with a splash of almond milk and stirred’er up. Still kinda clumpy- it would definitely be better in a blender (with a banana and maybe some peanut butter?).

I normally really hate artificial sweetener and this has Stevia in it. This wasn’t the best tasting thing ever, but honestly (maybe I was just hungry after my run) it was pretty good for a protein powder. Very minimal weird fake-sugar after taste.

The Verdict

I think I’ll try it again. I prefer to eat my protein but sometimes it’s hard to get it all in. This was a good hold-me-over between my run and breakfast that I eat at my desk.

It’s hard to say much else about it without using the product for a while, but I liked the flavor and have been looking for non-soy and non-whey protein.

Plus they have a chai flavor, which would be a good morning smoothie booster.

Hmm pumpkin puree, banana, cinnamon and chai? – Ok I digress…

Questions:

  1. Do you take supplements or protein powder? What are your thoughts?
  2. What’s the best free sample you’ve ever received?

I don’t use a protein powder or supplement. However, I have been considering it lately for post workout. Is there a reason you didn’t want to use Whey or Soy? Is there something ‘bad’ about them or just personal preference?
