What We Ate Wednesday: the Final NYC Weekend

August 14, 2013 by Georgie @ The Long Run

In the craziness of enjoying my last weekend in NYC with my sister, then moving myself home (for a week), I skipped writing a Late Night Light Bite post. So this week’s WIAW is a bit of a hybrid.

Brunch

Omelet with mushroom, fresh mozzarella & sun dried tomato

NYC Brunch

We all (Nell, her boyfriend & I) shared this muffin with homemade strawberry butter

Nell got an omelet with sharp cheddar, apple slices and onions

Afternoon Snack at the Brooklyn Smorgasburg

The amount of times I turned to Nellie to say, “Oh my god I’m dying,” was borderline ridiculous. The Smorgasburg is a weekly local food market with vendors selling everything from specialty nut butters (I know) to international cuisine, to gourmet s’mores, to lobster rolls and everything in between.

NYC Skyline

This market wasn’t just a feast for the tummy, but for the eyes. It fed my branding and design geek just as much as my sweet tooth. So I snapped my favorite signage.

After strolling through the entire market looking at every stall we decided on getting these incredible ice cream sandwiches from The Good Batch.

Nellie ordered the Goodwich, an oat chocolate chunk cookie with sea salt fudge drizzle and vanilla ice cream

and I had the Almond Macaroon a coconut macaroon with dark chocolate mousse, toasted almonds and vanilla ice cream

After Smorgasburg, we strolled through the Artist & Fleas Market. Eye candy. Nell and I returned the next day to the Artists & Fleas at Chelsea Market and bought beautiful jewelry from Stern Design Works.

It’s funny how I hate spending more than 20 dollars on a shirt or pair of pants but will drop major bucks for jewelry, especially if I meet the designer.

The Best Meal I’ve Ever Had

Being a thrifty student, I didn’t get the chance to eat out much in NYC which is a shame because I love trying new restaurants and well it’s New York City. However, my sister and I  had a special “treat yo self” dinner (thanks mom!) at Pure Food and Wine in Gramercy.

I found Pure Food and Wine on Yelp! while searching for interesting vegetarian restaurants. It had great reviews, the pictures looked amazing and the best part: 100% raw vegan. We had to try it!

It was certainly a Treat Yo Self meal. Fortunately Nell and I are blessed with the gift (and curse) that we love the exact same foods, so sharing is always a thing.

Top (mine: zucchini “lasagna” with heirloom tomatoes pistachio pesto & cashew “ricotta”)

Bottom (Nellie’s: tamales with cashew “sour cream” and cinnamon mole)

Dessert: Treat Yo Self

You might be wondering: Did they do anything besides eating?

Why yes! Yes we did. When we weren’t indulging in amazing food we ran along the hudson, explored the West Village, perused several markets and walked just about everywhere.

Questions

  • What’s the one thing you don’t mind spending a little more money on?
  • Have you been to any good food markets?
  • Best thing you ate recently?

I have so much food jealousy right now! I’ve heard of Smorgasburg and I really really want to go there and eat everything 😛

I definitely prioritize what I eat and don’t mind spending more money on good food. I think it’s definitely worth it!

If you ever get the chance, definitely do it! We had so much fun just looking (but tasting wasn’t too bad either) Plus there’s a great view of the skyline

My sister and I were blown away that it was all raw vegan too! When we asked what the “cheese” and “ice cream” were made out of it was usually some combination of nuts.

First, what camera do you use? Your pictures are phenomenal!
I dont mind spending more money on a good dress, almond butter, running shoes for training, and fresh produce. More than one thing, but still. 🙂

Thanks so much! I use a Nikon D3100 with the standard kit lens.
Those are all excellent ways to enjoy hard earned cash! Thanks for stopping by Audrey 🙂

That food looks A-mazing! Love finding a good veggie restaurant, and taking meat eaters there to prove veggie food is delish! My favourite food markets are Borough Market in South London, and La Boquiera in Barcelona (soo much fresh fruit and veg and so colourful.) x

I miss the Borough Market so much! It was one of my favorite places to have lunch on a Saturday. Markets are definitely eye candy too!

Aw looks like you had so much fun!! I’ve always wanted to explore the different markets in NYC. I’ve never tried a raw vegetarian restaurant but now I think I’m gonna have to!

I wish I had done more markets when I was there this summer too. It’s so much fun to meet the artists and chefs who are normally behind the scenes.
