What I Ate on the Road Wednesday

August 21, 2013 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Monday, my mom and I made our final back to school trek up to Ithaca for my senior year. (GULP) It involves a 2 hour boat ride and 7 hours in the car so it’s a bit of a marathon, at least for people who aren’t fans of sitting for that long.

Family Dinner

Family Dinner the night before we left.

Nothing makes you ravenous and crave candy like sitting still for 7 hours. Ugh. So this time I wanted to plan ahead and pack healthy tasty road food for our travels so I wouldn’t feel quite so gross by the time we reached our destination.

A Game of Thrones

While driving we’ve been listening to A Game of Thrones. Diggin’ it so far.

For Breakfast on the Boat:

PB&J Yogurt Breakfast Cantaloupe

Fage 0% with homemade strawberry-rhubarb low-sugar jam & almond butter & Cataloupe

Quick stop at Starbucks (not pictured) for an iced Americano with a splash of soy

We went to Trader Joe’s to load up on goodies for my new kitchen (because there are none in upstate NY) and buy healthy road snacks and lunches.

Snack:

Pink Lady ApplePink Lady Apple

Lunch:

Spring RollsSpring Rolls

Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce

Snack:

Wasabi Seaweed

Wasabi Seaweed Snacks

(not pictured) Trader Joe’s Roasted Coconut

Dinner:

Roast Vegetables

The first meal in my new apartment! We had brought roasted veggies in a little cooler and some raw string beans.

Friday my best friend and long time roommate moves in! Whoop. Well I have a thousand things to organize and put away till then.

Questions:

  • How do you stay healthy when you travel?
  • What’s your favorite road snack?
  • Have you read or watched Game of Thrones? Thoughts?

I am heavily addicted to springrolls at the moment. My favorite food whan I travel is everything you can eat with your hands like springrolls and my mixed bean burger patties. And things that get better the longer they are mixed together like mixed vegetable and quinoa salad.

My favorite unhealthy road trip snack are those Troli Brite sour gummy worms and peach rings. Actually, any kind of gummys 😛 I actually don’t eat that much candy anymore, and prefer to pack fresh fruit on long car trips. Those easy-to-peel clementines are perfect snacks, and they’ll make your car smell good!

Clementines are AMAZING. They make the winter season bearable and somehow peels from trips past never quite leave the car for good.

It’s all about planning and packing lots of snacks for travel! Looks like you did that too 🙂 I’m jealous you still have a year in college left… enjoy it, I miss it already!

If 3 years went by this fast I can’t imagine how fast my senior year will go by!

Ah college, that decade of my life was great. Except for all the weight I gained from drinking too much beer and eating everything in sight. Usual road trip fare used to include a trip to McDonald’s or Burger King (poor planning). However, the last road trip I packed plenty of Gatorade, blueberries and strawberries along with some string cheese. Enjoy that last year of college…real work is awesome compared to college, said no one. ever.

Berries are perfect for road snacking- I know I always crave something sweet so it’s a better sub for candy.
I’m definitely going to be taking advantage of my last year- I have no idea how I became a senior all of a sudden.

I highly recommend! Especially if it has a peanut sauce 😉

Those TJs spring rolls look so good!

When I travel I definitely like to pack or stop to buy healthy snacks. Apples, Greek yogurt, pre-cut fruit, and trail mix are my favourites!

Also I’m reading Game of Thrones (on the 4th book) and watching the series, and I’m seriously obsessed! How are you liking it so far? Have you ever watched the show?

Really starting to get into it so far! The writing is so rich I can imagine that it’s an epic show. I can’t wait to start watching once I finish reading.

Game of Thrones!!! Finally! Excellent choice! I listened to the audio book to keep me awake while I commuted for one of my summer clinical rotations, and then got hooked. Love the show; I’m working my way through book 5.

I can’t believe its your SENIOR YEAR! Congrats and have fun and enjoy the apartment!

So, we used to drive to Michigan every summer when living in Mass, and then you know we’ve made the LOOOONG drive to Mass a couple of times, so our family is pretty used to road snacks. I love cut raw veggies, just a bunch of baby carrots, cucumber slices, and green pepper in a gallon Ziploc bag. Apple slices. Driving around for residency interviews, I got hooked on tomato basil Wheat Thins and dark chocolate peanut M&Ms. Not healthy or clean but SO GOOD and definitely keep me awake.

I continued to binge on listening to GoT while setting up my apartment and now I have the narrator’s voice stuck in my head!

Besides the lack of TJs…Ithaca is PRETTY AWESOME! I went to school up there as well and miss it terribly! Awesome post about sticking to the healthy food bandwagon while traveling 🙂

I absolutely love Ithaca for all it’s quirks and the amazing sunsets – oh and not to mention the fact it has more restaurants per capita than NYC! (tour guide fact) Can’t wait to start senior year. Thanks for reading
