A Trip to the Grocery Store (Inside the Shopping Bags)

January 25, 2014 by Georgie @ The Long Run

This week I’m sharing what one of my typical (bi-weekly) grocery hauls looks like. This may be strange for some, but I actually love grocery shopping. I spend waaay to long wandering the aisles looking at new products and thinking of recipes. As a busy college student I stock up and go every other week to save time and I’ve become so accustomed to shopping for two weeks it’s become habit.

It’s great being back at school again because Ithaca, NY has an epic grocery store, Wegmans. Wegmans is a mecca of food. Their organic/healthy and produce sections are massive and it’s all reasonably priced (as compared to stores like Whole Foods).

This is what 2 weeks of food looks like (more or less). Some items last more than others, but unless I decide to make a recipe I don’t have ingredients for, I like to go shopping every other week. Usually it costs me around $70.

Grocery Shopping

Produce

  • Pink Lady Apples < could not live without
  • Butternut Squash
  • Bananas < I buy a TON because they’re cheap and awesome for baking and when they’re frozen
  • Avocados
  • Kale
  • Arugula
  • Blackberries <expensive, but so worth it
  • Raspberries
  • Edamame
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots <pre-shredded for salad
  • Butternut Squash Soup <staple for cold, lazy nights

Dairy

  • Siggi’s Icelandic Yogurt <a treat because they were on sale
  • Fage Yogurt <not the cheapest, but by far my favorite
  • Soymilk <my favorite brand is Westsoy unsweetened vanilla

Pantry

  • Almond Slivers
  • Oats
  • Cinnamon Kashi Cereal
  • Puffed Rice Cereal
  • Pumpkin Butter

Goodies

  • Carob Covered Raisins
  • Coconut Bai

So there it is! My favorite item? Definitely the berries. They’ll go really quickly and they’re not cheap but they’re worth every penny! In second place are the coconut bais. I don’t buy them all the time but they’re a healthy alternative to coffee for those 3pm slumps.

My weakness? I’m not always the best at mixing it up. Even though I spend forever in the store and contemplate buying new things, I usually stick with my same staples. Which leads me to my questions…

Question Time:

  • What are your favorite weekly (or bi-weekly) purchases?
  • Have you tried anything new and delicious that you’d recommend?
  • What’s the one thing you will splurge on?

I have a new favorite pick-me-up that you’ll be getting in the post soon….<3
Fave food besides my homemade granola & BERRIES- butternut squash (so versatile). I recently bought a squash and roasted the whole thing up in small chunks and was able to get several meals that included this bright little gem; salad topping, pizza topping, veggie side with fish, ingredient in a breakfast scrumble….

Squash is definitely one of those winter foods that makes winter a bit more bearable. It’s been a big time saver to buy the pre-cut veg too.
      Miss ya!

I make my own yogurt. Ever try it? So economical…..
And I recently learned that bananas keep a lot longer if you store them separated from the bunch….it is amazing how long they last! Weeks…
…..Clean your berries in a 1 part vinegar 3 parts water….soak for 10 minutes and they are clean and last a lot longer stored in fridge…..works great on raspberries……
    Love your list!

Ooo I’ve heard about making yogurt (I’m sure it would save me a fortune). I’ll definitely try the banana thing too. Thanks for reading xo
