Fighting Winter Funk with New Goals

February 8, 2014 by Georgie @ The Long Run

As I alluded to in this week’s WIAW I’m in a bit of a funk.

Confession: I underestimated how hard it would be to train in the winter.

Yes, I knew it would be hard weather wise, but I didn’t realize how much less motivation because of it. I also didn’t account for the fact that I started out in less shape than I did this fall (when I had been running a lot over the summer).

All I want to do is wear leggings and ginormous sweaters that cover my entire body and hats that disguise my lack of grooming. Lately, as soon as I get home I put on my “day robe” which is a giant velcro sweatshirt thing that is most definitely from the early 90’s. It’s so comfortable and easy and lazy. When I’m in the robe I feel like I don’t ever have to try to move again. Yes, this is what winter has done to me.

Be Your Best Self

I wore a dress for the first time in MONTHS on Friday. It was really hard. I don’t think I’ve worn anything that hasn’t been gray, black, navy blue or brown since 2013. I don’t like looking in mirrors because I see a blobby version of me. I think I’m a chameleon that blends in with the weather, which is always gray.

What I’m saying is I need a shake up. Bad. Working out helps, but sometimes its hard to even summon the energy to do that. My grocery shop this week was 95% fruits and vegetables, but I’ve got to do something more. So I sat down and made some goals. These goals put me closer to being the best version of myself, I call them the “Be Your Best Self” goals.

Goals:

  • Feel comfortable, strong and confident in my own skin.
  • Find out what my version of healthy means.
  • Listen to my body to figure out when to push myself and when to indulge.
  • Express myself on the outside.
  • Eat and hydrate in a way that gives me energy and strength.

How I Plan on Achieving Them:

  • Take more time in the morning for my beauty/skin/fashion routine.
  • Find more ways to “treat” myself without food, especially to curb my late night snacking habit: clean/organize (yes I enjoy this), paint nails, read a magazine or book, dance, draw, drink tea, craft.
  • HYDRATE: Drink at least 64 oz of water every day.Be Your Best Self
  • Don’t snack mindlessly.
  • Challenge myself: add variety in meals, variety in fashion & variety in workouts/runs.
  • Record progress to remain accountable.
  • Reduce added sugars to increase energy.

Ok, so I’m biting off a lot. But I think I can do it. To stay accountable I’ll be doing weekly check-ins similar to my “Late Night Light Bite” posts, but I’ll call them “BYBS check ins.” If you want to fight the winter funk with me I’d love to hear some of your goals and we can stay accountable together!

The word ‘dance’ stood out for me from your post, so I am going to dance once a day in February to help me go from ‘funk’ to ‘funky’
