WIAW: Rethink Fat-Free Yogurt

July 9, 2014 by Georgie @ The Long Run

What I Ate WednesdayHowdy Gang! Hope Wednesday is looking mighty fine for you. I snapped a sunny selfie after work. I’m obsessed with the new tanks and tees we have at Bai (mine says “high five for Bai 5”) and I had fun rocking it with a jirt and jeans – denim on denim awww yeah. What I Ate Wednesday

Ok, ok, let’s eat!

Breakfast: 2% plain fage (which is totally buried) mango, raspberries, almond butter and a little apricot jam.

A note about fat free yogurt: for years and year I always chose fat free yogurt. 0% greek yogurt is still pretty creamy and I thought if I could shave off a couple calories and grams of fat isn’t that what I should do? But I’ve finally made the switch. I used to save 2% for a special treat, but honestly it’s too good to pass up and totally worth it. More and more research (worth watching) is showing that a certain amount of fat in your diet isn’t only ok, but essential. I’m a huge embracer of healthy fats like avocados, nuts, olive oil and coconut oil. Not to mention, when I eat full fat yogurt I’m not hungry for hours, which is clutch when I’m busy all morning. So moral of the story: EAT FAT (the good stuff). What I Ate Wednesday Iced Coffee: now that I’ve returned to making my own iced coffee every day I’m saving so much money. I’ve stocked up on my favorite beans (from Gimme! in Ithaca) but brewing myself is clutch for the bank account.

I know I promised my cold brew recipe but I’m still tweaking it, I want it to be absolutely perfect. What I Ate WednesdayLunch: Cabbage, carrots, pepitas, edamame, dried cherries, pecans and smoked salmon with a drizzle of Trader Joe’s spicy peanut dressing.

(does anyone else feel awkward eating salad at the office?)
What I Ate Wednesday

Snacks: pink lady apple, almonds & a quest bar (my favorite flavor = cookies & cream)What I Ate Wednesday

At the gym: I’ve always wanted to have more upper body strength so I’ve been focusing on lifting for about 30 minutes at the beginning of my workouts 3-4 days a week. I don’t have much muscle still, but these baby guns are growing slowly.

What I Ate WednesdayDinner: Sautéed kale, shredded carrots, zucchini, almonds, pepitas and tofu cooked with sesame oil and coconut oilWhat I Ate WednesdayThe Zert: Tiny blob of yogurt with chocolate coconut peanut butter (Wild Friends) with a bit of fresh mango and a sprinkle of homemade granola.

Healthy Dessert

Your Turn:

  • What’s your favorite snack to pack for work (or class or a day out)? (apples)
  • Do you ever feel awkward eating salads? (I’m painfully awkward)
  • Favorite summer fruit? (watermelon, cherries and nectarines oh and raspberries – I guess I can’t decide)

I’ve been thinking the same thing about nonfat and regular yogurt (and dairy) It’s crazy how we start to believe something that ends up being not as true! Also, love the idea of brewing your own cold brew. Would definitely love some tips on saving there!

Thanks for stopping by Kaitlin – I’ve definitely fallen pray to marketing hype before but it’s refreshing to see that there’s a big shift away from “fat-free” everything.

That kale and tofu looks yummy! I am an embracer of healthy fats too – probably too much so! 😉

I used to be the same way when it came to yogurt. I would only eat fat free and would be terrified of eating 2% or full fat, but now I completely prefer 2% over fat free. A) it keeps me fuller; B) it’s creamier and more satisfying; C) a little fat ain’t a bad thing as you said!
I definitely look like a cow when I eat my salads. I try to get a bite of everything on my fork, so the bite ends up being huge, and I end up having to look away from other people if I’m eating in public.

Haha you’re comment made smile 🙂 I always have a napkin handy whilst eating my salad for a bit of a cover up. I’m so glad to hear people are jumping on the 2% train

I am so awkward when it comes to eating salad in public. My favorite summer fruit is watermelon! The only time we can get it at a decent price is summer and I go crazy when we get it.

Ughhh watermelon is SOoOOooOOo good- I could eat it all day. I used to work at an ice cream shop/juice bar and my FAVORITE job was to cut the watermelon<3

grow them baby guns! Just so you know, salad eating self-consciousness does fade with age- it’s just too good & good for you to worry about a little salad dressing or greens dribbling down your chin! And as you know, I have always ‘sacrificed’ myself to whole milk yogurt 😉
your dessert idea will be tried this evening with a variation on the coconut choco-peanut butter drizzle; I’ll probably just sprinkle flakes of coconut with a drizzle of maple syrup and peanut butter….

      Maple syrup is genius!

We actually don’t have fat-free yogurt over here or any kind of fat-free cheese/ ricotta/ you name it-dairy. Back in my deeply disordered days I’d have likely gotten all kinds of fat-free food pretending it tasted awesome. Thinking about it, I used to eat those Quark pots that weren’t completely fat-free but very low in it and they had a huge amount of sugar in them. Proving that fat-free not only comes at the price of less satisfaction but usually a bunch of flavourings, sugar or other add-ins you’d rather do without. Long story short: yes to fat!
Don’t make me pick a favourite summer fruit – strawberries, blueberries, donut peaches, …

Great post. Once you have 2% yogurt you can’t go back to 0%! It’s not that big of a fat/cal difference and fats are wonderful and satisfying. 2% yogurt is SO much more creamy and delicious! Lately I’ve been loving the Noosa yogurts for breakfast. They are amazing!

Couldn’t agree more! Noosa is wonderful. I’ve had their coconut and pumpkin but all the flavors sound great
