Trust Your Gut

July 23, 2014 by Georgie @ The Long Run

In addition to sharing what a day in the life of my tummy looks like, I also wanted to share a bit of my current food philosophy. And that is : Trust Your Gut. Basically what it means is making sure that you’re listening to yourself before the latest health trend.

If the world is going gluten free, but you thrive on avocado toast in the morning, then listen to your gut. There are plenty of trendy diets that say dairy is going to kill me, but I enjoy and thrive on a little 2% greek yogurt in the morning.

On the flip side, if you’re feeling sluggish after your meals and something isn’t quite right take it upon yourself to find out what does make you thrive, you deserve it. Maybe that means going to a doctor to get a professional opinion rather than months of guess work, but it’s your right to feel the best you can.

A personal struggle I have is trying to add variety to my diet. I miss having a CSA that helped me try new veggies and took the guess work out of shopping. Even when I do make lists I tend to go with the same types of meals over and over again. I’ve read contradictory studies how variety is good but also how sticking with the same types of food is good so really I need to find what works for me.

So those are today’s thoughts. Sticking to my gut for the answers, maybe adding a little more variety into my meals.

Agreed. It’s easy to fall victim to any current health fad when your stomach’s not quite happy and blame an ‘unpopular’ food/ food group/ ingredient like gluten for any woes. When in fact you might not be doing well because the whole high protein trend isn’t for you and a scoop of protein powder already has your stomach in knots [true story]. Our gut is the only truly trustworthy source of information we have in terms of food.
Also, I’m with you on finding myself buy the same vegetables over and over. I considered joing a CSA but the offers I saw weren’t quite a fit for my budget. Now to find other ways of challenging myself…
I just bought some cabbage – which I actually hadn’t had in a while so can I consider that adding variety ;)? – so your lunch salad is intriguing me. What kind of dressing do you use?

Love your trust your gut philosophy!! It’s the same as mine! I’ve never been one of a trend follower, and it seems they are EVERYWHERE. Especially in the health and wellness industry!
