What I Ate Wednesday: Secret Identities

November 12, 2014 by Georgie @ The Long Run

One of the many things I enjoy about “What I Ate Wednesday” (hosted by the hilarious, delightful Jenn of Peas & Crayons) is being able to find, connect and food gawk with a bunch of awesome foodies. I’ve found a ton of every day food inspiration and plenty of new blends (blog friends).

So with that said – I have a question for my bloggin’ blendies out there. Do you ever feel like you have a secret identity? How do you bring up that you’re a blogger? At what point in your friendships or relationships does the “blog talk” happen?

Sometimes I’m asked a super innocent question – what do you do for fun? I usually spill out that I enjoy photography, running, traveling, making stuff… but I almost always leave out that I spend a ton of time writing, cooking, researching, building, photographing, designing, and growing a blog. I’m not embarrassed by it. I’m actually wicked proud. But for some reason I kind of like having a place where I get to meet new people and open up in a unique way from my daily life.

Vegetarian What I Ate Wednesday

I would absolutely LOVE to hear your thoughts about this. Bloggers – when do you spill that you have a blog & readers, how would you react if your friend/co-worker/relative told you about having a blog (something that they put a lot of time/effort into)?

Ok– I’ll shut up it’s food time!

Your Turn:

  • Bloggers: When do you bring up blogging with your friends/co-workes/relatives?
  • Readers: How would you feel if your friend told you (or did tell you) they had a blog?

I don’t usually tell people that I know that I have a blog unless they ask. If my friend had one, I would def want to check it out!

I feel ya – unless it’s a natural part of the conversation there aren’t always natural times to bring it up. I love reading people I know’s blogs. It’s so cool to see a person’s passion!

I share my blog posts on Facebook and Twitter, so all my friends and family know about it.
At first, I wasn’t sure if it would be weird, but everyone’s been so supportive about it! Even just people I know in my classes tell me all the time that they’ve been reading, which is so fun.

That’s really great! I actually have separate social accounts because I was nervous and didn’t want to bombard people who weren’t interested, but I definitely have found over time there’s been some happy blending and you’re spot on, people are super supportive! (or don’t care) either is fine with me 🙂

At first I didn’t tell anyone. Eventually friends started finding it through my twitter and I became okay with connecting my instagram. So I guess I kind of let others find it, I never really told people. I wasn’t embarrassed about it either, I just felt weird about it! Some people judged me but I would say the overwhelming majority thought it was SO cool. So be proud of it and connect it to your Facebook or something to break the ice 🙂

That’s really refreshing to hear Sarah – I share things occasionally on my personal instagram and most of my close friends know about it. I’m definitely considering sharing more, and hearing about your experience helps a lot! Happy Wednesday 🙂

No one other than my family knows about my blog, which is kind of weird to me! Someone recently found my blog’s instagram (because it’s linked to my email) so I guess I need to get ready to deal with it. BTW- your pictures are amazing.

It’s always a bit alarming when an acquaintance stumbles upon your blog… I always wonder what pages they’ve read or if they think I’m crazy – but it’s definitely not something that’s kept me up at night… ok maybe a little 😉

Thanks so much! Totally check out the app VSCO cam it’s a game changer

I never actually told my family and friends I had a blog. I just started sharing my posts on Facebook & it went from there. As for if anyone cares or thinks I’m strange, well that’s on them – not me 🙂

Give me that pie recipe right now. Hehe 🙂 Okayyy — please? 🙂

I don’t really talk about my blog too much in person. It’s come up at work once or twice, specifically because I work in marketing and do a little with our corporate blog. But otherwise, I always feel a little weird “promoting” my blog on my personal social media and stuff. In the back of my mind I feel like people will “gossip” and think I’m trying to be cool or something… but then I’m like, 1) They’re probably not (haha), and 2) Who cares if they are?! 🙂 So curious to hear others’ thoughts on this as well!

As time has passed I’ve definitely blended blog life and real life. My family is super supportive and it makes my day when my mom tells me she’s made a recipe – and there have been a few Itha-friends who have told me they’ve enjoyed the blog which is such an ego boost 🙂 Your blog rocks and you should definitely be proud to share!

Oh, I hear you! I often times struggle with the decision of “to tell them about my blog…to not tell them about my blog?” That is the question. I think it mostly depends on the situation, for instance right now I’m job searching within the industries of social media marketing, advertising, etc. so when I mention my blog it is actually valuable because it shows a skillset I have relevant to the jobs I’m applying. But if I am networking with someone or talking with someone from another business?…Probably not. Because many people just DO NOT get it. My friends though, heck yes! They all know. 🙂

      November 12, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Definitely use your blog in conversations about digital marketing/social. My blog actually helped me get my job – I had a lot of experience (more than I realized) because of it!

Haha it took about 2 years for me to really tell people about my blog! Now, all my friends know about it, since it’s part of how I got my job!

I haven’t told anyone but my family and one friend about the blog. While I’m not sure I’d mind most of my friends finding out, I work with coworkers who definitely wouldn’t get it.

I kind of like the state it’s in now though, because I feel like I don’t have to cater to anyone. I write it mostly for myself (okay, and my mom, because she reads). And there’s no real agenda.

      November 13, 2014 at 8:39 am

I definitely feel ya- luckily I work with a bunch of healthy foodies so sometimes I talk about the blog – in fact, it actually helped me get my job – but I’m sure if I didn’t work at a healthy beverage company it would be a lot different. It’s nice being able to write for a specific and passionate community.

Everyone knows that I have a blog but it helps me as friends, training partners give the best feedback!
Lots of my running friends/competitors also have blogs but rather than competing against each other everyone has a different spin on theirs 🙂
    Love the blogging community!

Amen! My competitive side used to get jealous but I’ve learned that it’s not a zero sum game and a win for one blogger is actually a win for many. Plus how many people (who read blogs) stop at just one. Thanks for stopping by Charlotte

That picture of the smoothie is sweet! For the first 6 months of my blog I didn’t let anyone know I had it. Eventually I told my family by inviting them all to like it on FB! Now just about everyone knows about it, whether they read or even understand it, I don’t know. I was worried they’d all think I’m super weird (they probably do..) but overall it’s been really positive feedback!

Aww thanks – gotta love finding a little lace to throw in there 😉
The same definitely happened for me, slow start now most people know about it and a small group read and (hopefully) enjoy it. Luckily there haven’t been many(or any) haters. Thank god!

Hi Georgie! That’s so funny because a lot of people don’t know about my blog. I teach tons of group fitness classes and I know those participants would love to read my blog, but I haven’t really taken the time to announce it. So I just let it come up casually if it happens. And by the way, your food looks great. I love WIAW!

Aww thanks so much! I feel ya, on letting it come organically. I know if I was taking a group fitness class I would LOVE to find out my instructor had a blog. Maybe if you have business cards it could be a cool thing to talk about. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

ummm so I need that pumpkin pie recipe. Like…yesterday. It’s funny, I actually don’t like pumpkin pie all that much, but when Thanksgiving rolls around I absolutely CRAVE it. Just another weirdo thing my body does 😉

Haha thanks gurl! The pie tasted extra good because I had such a bad pie making experience last year… womp
