Kale Berry Power Smoothie

February 17, 2015 by Georgie @ The Long Run

This Kale Berry Power Smoothie is bursting with fruity flavor and with 25g of protein and 22g of fiber it will keep you full & energized throughout the day.

KaleBerryPowerSmoothie4

It’s no secret I like love am obsessed with smoothies. There might be 7 feet of snow outside my window (I wish I was kidding) but I’m riding the smoothie train hard. If you follow me on Instagram or have seen any of my WIAW (What I Ate Wednesday) posts, you’ve witnessed the smoothie mania. Smoothies are such a great way to pack a nutritional punch first thing in the morning. Not only are you consuming fruit, but by adding veggies, protein, and nutrient dense toppings you can make smoothies not just a tasty treat, but a totally legit meal. Plus, unlike juices, the fiber isn’t extracted so you’re more likely to stay fuller longer.

I love my morning smoothie ritual. I’m usually making my french press full of coffee at the same time, so the smell of coffee drifts through the air as I blend. I always start with a ripe frozen banana and add whatever frozen fruit I have on hand then throw in greens, my Vega protein powder (not paid btw, I genuinely love that stuff) a little cinnamon and vanilla extract then blend it up with Bai, coconut milk or almond milk. Oh, then the toppings. I love adding hemp and sunflower seeds, a tablespoon of nut butter and the fresh berries I have on hand, but let’s be real it’s almost always blackberries (because oMg yUm).

I made this Kale Berry Power Smoothie combo one morning and couldn’t get over it. I had to share this epic combo with you guys because it’s a serious smoothie game changer.

Here’s why this smoothie rocks

Taste:

First let’s start with the texture because that’s paramount in smoothie consumption. This Kale Power Berry beauty is velvety smooth and thick enough t0 eat with a spoon (my favorite). I love stirring in the toppings to get a surprise crunch now and again.

The sweet creamy banana is the perfect match for the tart flavorful raspberries, which pack a pretty pink punch. The combination of banana, raspberry, kale, coconut and vanilla might not sound typical but the flavors blend so well together. The extra crunch and umph from the blackberries, hemp seeds and sun butter makes this creamy, fruity smoothie a meal that will satisfy until lunch time (a must if you’re on the go or are tired of depleting your snack stock.)

Nutrition:

This smoothie (with toppings) has 25g of protein from the hemp seeds and protein powder, 22g of fiber from the fruit, hemp seeds and protein powder. Not to mention all the micronutrients from the kale, fruit, Vega and hemp seeds. Can you say power breakfast? With all that fiber, protein, healthy fat and carbs you’ll have the sustained energy you need to kick some serious booty.

I usually dreat (drink/eat) my smoothie around 7am in the morning and don’t have lunch until 1pm and most mornings I don’t need a snack. Crazy right? This is powerful stuff.

I love drinking smoothies, but not for bfast in the winter! Just too cold for that. I usually have them for lunch or dessert

Haha I can totally understand that. They do make a great dessert – recently made this coconut chocolate smoothie that would be perfect post-dinner

Welp it looks like I’ll have to take a trip to Florida (been looking for an excuse) and I’ll pack a ton of bananas (they’ll be ripe by the time I get there)

Coffee and smoothies are the greatest way to start the day, no matter what the temperature is! I’m an iced coffee gal and I get a lot of stares from people when it’s snowing outside when i’m holding an iced coffee. OHoh and love hemp seeds!! They’re the best.

I love it! Iced coffee in New England isn’t a negotiable. My sister took this hilarious pic of her friend sipping iced coffee in front of a 7ft snow mound. Hemp seeds are a recent revelation and I’m all about them!

Ummm so do you know how many times I have made something similar to this in the past couple of weeks???? I always add hemp seeds on top (not in, cause I like the taste and crunch) and always a spoonful of nut butter. High-Fives and hope you are still saying sane! XOXO

Yess! The hemp seed+nut butter topping combo is just too good to forgo. I love seeing your smoothie pics – we could totally share a blender (and really a kitchen for that matter) I may have lost it today (my car hates this weather more than I do), but I had a brief dance party by myself and things are looking up.

Wow so glad I found your blog! I love it! I just started trying to eat more meatless/vegetarian meals. It actually hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be. I can’t wait to try your sweet potato burgers recipe 🙂

Wow thank you so much Patty! I’m so glad you found my little corner of the web. I think one of my favorite things about the sweet potato burgers (besides how good they taste) is that the recipe makes so many! You can either eat them all week (on buns, in salads, as a snack) or freeze them for later.

This is a fabulous looking smoothie! I love hemp seeds, only second to my love of chia seeds, and the combination with the blackberries sounds great. Great photos as well.

Thanks Jessie! Hemp and chia seeds are so wonderful. Chia is seriously a magical food. Blackberries are totally my go to so I was so excited when they were on sale at Whole Foods 🙂
