What I Ate Wednesday: The Power of Community

March 18, 2015 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Hi friends. It’s Wednesday, so you know what that means?! Time to share some food I ate and some food for thought. After a year and a half of blogging about health, running and fooood, I’ve contemplated many times whether I want to keep doing “What I Ate Wednesday” posts. My answer keeps coming up “YES!” and it’s because this link up reminds me how supportive and fantastic this blogging community is. I think of WIAW almost like a family dinner. It’s so nice to be able to break bread with people you care about. WIAW is like breaking internet bread… yummy! I give Jenn the maddest of props for all the time and effort she’s put into building this fantastic community of WIAW’ers.

Sometimes the internet can seem so random and anonymous, but luckily the healthy living and food blogging community is anything but. Bloggers are crazy generous with all the incredible content they share on a weekly sometimes daily basis and almost all of it is for free. Can we pause to talk about how amazing that is? And you know why the photos are so beautiful, the recipes so delicious, the workouts so thoughtfully crafted, the thought pieces so meaningful? Because they come from a place of passion and dedication. Props to all you bloggers out there. Keep doing your thang because I, for one, think you’re the bees knees and none of my time or effort would be worth anything if I didn’t get to connect with you.

Also, WIAW is a great excuse to talk about food and who doesn’t love talking about food? Well, speaking of food…

Breakfast

Yesterday I kicked of my morning with a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl made with Chocolate Vega One (affiliate link) and topped with sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, coconut, blackberries and of course…. some almond butter.

WIAW Pescatarian

Lunch

Shoved ALL the arugula into a tupperware along with some pea sprouts, seeds, cucumber and a homemade tuna sweet potato pattie topped with tahini.

WIAW Pescatarian

Snacks

Cara cara orange. My sister turned me onto these babies and now I’m hooked.

WIAW Pescatarian

Nut butter dates. I like to keep things interesting so I had a peanut butter, a sunflower seed butter and two almond butter stuffed dates.

I was riding the struggle bus at 3pm so I popped out for an iced almond milk latte, which did the trick.

Dinner

After taking my first yoga class, (in forever) I inhaled this plate full of zoodles, kale and basil topped with an egg and a side of Nova Lox (splurged on the good stuff and it was so worth it)

I love your food and food for thought! As a blog reader I love blogs that share bits and pieces of their life mixed with insightful posts. I don’t like when it’s just straight ” words of wisdom” without some personal reflection (if that makes sense). Pretty food pictures doesn’t hurt either 😉

Aww thanks Emily – I think if it’s too much straight up wisdom it can come off either preachy or a little dull. I think a big part of loving certain blogs is all about connecting with the blogger’s “voice” whether it’s about an informational post or more personal.

I absolutely love the blogging community and I think that is what keeps me blogging day after day. In one sense blogging can be lonely when I spend my time typing a post into a computer, but when I am able to connect with others through comments, social media, and link ups, it really makes the blogging community seem like one big family!

I totally agree – there’s totally a balance of alone time and often lonely dedication with the more social aspect of connecting with readers and fellow writers. Glad we’ve been able to connect through the interwebs!

TJ’s has the best coconut products! If you’re ever looking to switch up your coffee game, their coconut creamer is the bomb! I should buy more flowers, I was tempted by their cute little succulent plants.

What a great day of food. Sometimes it really is best to splurge on the good stuff. This definitely is one of those times.

When it comes to animal proteins (like eggs & fish) I don’t mind splurging a little 😀

Hearing positive feedback definitely reminds you that remaking a cookie recipe 3 times to get it right is worth it.

I have an afternoon slump a lot of days, too– 3 pm comes around and I’m SO tired. That coffee looks like the perfect pick-me-up!

It definitely did the trick – so did getting out of the office for a couple minutes, getting some fresh air and new scenery.

Before I started blogging I never believed what every blogger said about the community part of it but now: yes, definitely agreed. It’s incredible how many like-minded people you can connect with – and I honestly hope I’ll be able to meet at least some of them in real life one day. The only ‘bad’ part I can see is balancing real and blog life at times. Because there’s -always- something going on somewhere on the internet.

      March 18, 2015 at 10:40 pm

Oh totally, I definitely struggle with the balancing real life and blog life – there’s always FOMO on either end. I’d love love to meet some of the bloggers I’ve connected with online.

I LOVE these posts – it’s nice to see what other health-conscious people are eating, and it gives me ideas for switching up my daily routine. I eat dates often as a quick snack before workouts…not sure how I never thought to add almond butter!!

For zucchini noodles – do you boil or sautee yours, or eat them raw? I have a Paderno spiralizer, but I haven’t used it much (waiting for spring/summer) and I would love to switch these out for my typical whole-wheat noods!

ALSO I’d love to try that tuna sweet potato pattie! I just made sweet potato cannelini bean burgers last night – I think your patties would be easier on the tummy. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!!!

I definitely get a ton of inspiration for meal ideas from WIAW posts and it’s nice to see a glimpse into lot of food/recipe bloggers’ daily lives too.

For my zoods I usually just sautee them in a pan with some coconut oil but I make sure to squeeze out the moisture before I cook them, so they get the right texture.

My sister and I like to call them “deconstructed lara bars” 😛

I love your way with telling stories, I really feel connected when I read your posts! I feel the same with WIAW’s, I LOVE looking at food pics, but sometimes I wonder if my non-health blogger readers really care about what I ate that day. It’s nice to have this community of people that really support each other!

Your food is so fascinating to me! It’s really interesting to see what people eat who don’t go heavy on meat. Gives me inspiration!

      March 18, 2015 at 11:10 pm

Aww thanks – it’s second nature at this point going sans-meat but if you ever need some more ideas or have any questions about eating pescatarian/vegetarian/ or vegan let me know!

I haven’t yet! I’ve been mostly just sauteing them with onions, but I did buy some basil this week and I have a few recipe ideas floatin’ around in the noggin’
