Pear, spinach, ginger and lime come together in a sweet, spicy and refreshing symphony of flavors. I promise this green smoothie will make up for every bad green juice you’ve ever had to choke down.
Has this ever happened to you? You’re scrolling through your Instagram feed and you start to think “hmm those green juices/smoothies look pretty interesting – everyone who drinks them won’t shut up about them, so there’s gotta be something to it right?” You then happen to stroll through a Whole Foods or maybe pass a local juice bar and think “Yes, here it is, today is the day I go green.”
You excitedly order your “Earthy Green Goddess Goodness” and take a big sip waiting for the magic to happen. But instead of the magical earthy bounty you expected you get a big gulp of what MUST be dirt. Like why did they put literal dirt in my cup? Alas, your $8 (that’s two iced lattes people) has been wasted on what can only be classified as lawn waste.
You ask yourself “what did I do wrong?” “are my tastebuds broken?” “what am I missing” “am I not turtle-y enough for the turtle club?” Fear not. You are not alone. Green smoothies done right should be a harmonious balance of “green” tasting without making you turn green. I like mine to be refreshing, light and finish with a zing. And let me tell you, this Pear Ginger Lime Green Smoothie checks ALL those boxes. No more mowed-grass-bullshit here.
I understand if you’ve been jaded, your trust broken. Let me fix it. Let me show you that there’s a better green smoothie waiting for you. Here’s the dealio why this green smoothie doesn’t suck: First, I chose a green that isn’t too “green,” making it ideal for blending: Spinach. Then I used 2 fruits that balance the green mango & pear. Now pear isn’t your typical smoothie fruit, but it’s so juicy and refreshing and acts as an excellent balance for the green-ness of any greens you may add. Finally to really add that “MmMmm Zinggg” (a very technical food term people) I finish with lime and ginger. Badaboom badabing.
- 1 Cup of Frozen Mango
- 1 1/2 Cups of Spinach
- 1 Medium Bartlett Pear
- 1 tsp of Fresh Chopped Ginger
- 1 Lime
- Splash of Coconut Water
- Slice pear into medium sized chunks and mince fresh ginger
- Place all ingredients into your blender (start with mango at the bottom, add spinach, then pear, ginger and squeeze the juice from the lime)
- Blend until smooth – if needed add a splash of coconut water to help blend
Bonus tip: If you’re ordering a smoothie at a juice bar make sure to check to see how ripe their fruit is. An unripe banana is like biting into saddness. If they don’t freeze the bananas use other frozen berries or mango to add the sweetness and texture you’re looking for.
Your Turn:
- Have you ever had a green smoothie dilemma – where what you ordered sounded great but tasted like grass?
- What’s your favorite smoothie green?
Haha. I felt the same way the very first time I had a green smoothie 2 years ago. Now I can’t go at least a week without drinking them. This recipe sounds so good. A must try. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Shamira! Good to know that I’m not the only one who felt this way.
OMG your first paragraph is literally the internal dialogue I have with myself about green smoothies. “Is today the day to try that drink everyone loves but sounds gross?” Haha. I realized for me to like a drink it has to have some fruit. I typically stick with apples but pears sound like a great change-up!
This smoothie looks perfect! I’m not one to get carried away with the intense greens for smoothies. Spinach works so well, so no need to throw in a bushel of kale that overpowers the smoothie 🙂
Exactly! I love love love eating almost any green but when it comes to drinking, spinach is my go-to.
I honestly don’t think I have ever bought a green smoothie, because I have this fear of it tasting like dirt. I love making my own, because I know they rock…LOL! And I honestly can’t justify spending $8 on a green juice that is definitely not going to fill me up. Yes I cannot stand being hungry after a meal, especially after a green juice drink…
Exactly, it’s really hard to justify an $8 drink that you’re not sure about. Plus when you’ve got awesome smoothie skills, the ones you make are probably waaay better.
I love the pear in this! <3 Such a wonderful fruit!
I’ve recently rediscovered how much I love pears. So underrated.
I had a few episodes of bad green smoothie experience..but now i stick with spinach and banana + strawberries or blueberries. I cant wait to try this.
Spinach is definitely my go-to smoothie green because I know it won’t over power everything else, but it’s still so good for you.
This sounds/looks SO GOOD. I love ginger and lime together – and this smoothie sounds so darn refreshing. I need it right now.
I have definitely been burned by green drinks in the past. I love making my own green juices at home, but let’s be real – juicers are a pain in the butt to clean. Almost every time I buy a pre-made green juice – I immediately regret it. For some reason, they taste like pickle juice with a hint of fruit to me. Weird? I don’t know. But I definitely prefer to roll with the homemade green drinks using either kale or spinach. Cucumbers are great as well!
Haha, I have totally had some BAD green smoothies – some I made myself! But I feel like I could trust you on this one.. pear&ginger&lime sounds so rad. Yum-UM!
I definitely have struggled with green juices in the past but after reading your post and the recipe ingredients – I think this is one green juice I could stomach! I love the addition of pear too it especially.
Thank you so much for this recipe! Pear, lime and ginger is my new favorite smoothie combination. Exactly what I needed today, it is so freakin hot!
Oh yay! I’m glad I found a fellow ginger-lover <3
