Almond butter and chocolate are a magical combination that should never be ignored. Why not make them into an awesome, healthy and protein packed Almond Butter Cup Smoothie? Cool. Let’s do it.
On the In it 4 the Long Run Smoothie Spectrum, this little gem is falls on the easier side, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious. Sometimes simplicity should be embraced, especially when chocolate is involved. No need to complicate perfection ammirite?
I want to let you in on one of my little smoothie secrets. Ok, maybe for some of you this is old hat, but in the past couple months I’ve discovered just how amazing cocoa powder is in smoothies. If you’ve ever had a smoothie with cocoa powder you know what I’m talking about. It gives the smoothie a rich, irresistible, velvety texture.
When I added cocoa powder to my favorite cherry smoothie it rocked my world and the Cherry Chocolate Smoothie was born. You guys, it tasted like I was drinking black forrest cake batter – without feeling like had just drank cake batter (if ya know what I’m sayin’). If you’re a chocolate lover, you gotta try it. It’s not just enough to use chocolate protein powder (which is great, don’t get me wrong) but the cocoa powder just changes the whole game.
Don’t believe me? Just look how silky smooth that smoothie is?
What makes this Almond Butter Cup Smoothie So Great?
If the name didn’t already give it away, this smoothie is what blendin’ dreams are made of, here’s why:
1.) Frozen bananas add that creamy dreamy frosty crave-worthy texture and subtle sweetness
2.) Cocoa powder gives your smoothie a silky smooth texture and rich chocolate taste
3.) Almond butter. Does it need any explanation?
4.) Almond milk is the perfect fuss free base that brings out the best in all the ingredients
5.) Chocolate protein powder adds more chocolatey flavor and gives it a nutritional boost
I love sipping on this smoothie first thing Saturday morning. Why? It’s so satisfying because you feel like you’re drinking something indulgent, but with a fabulous balance of carbs, fats and protein it keeps you energized all morning. Typically I’m up and around far more on the weekends so I need something with some staying power.
So if you’re looking for your pre-adventure breakfast, or post-workout shake that tastes amazeballs I’ve you covered.
- 2 Frozen Bananas
- 1/2 Cup of Almond Milk
- 1 Tbsp of Almond Butter
- 1 Scoop of Chocolate Protein Powder (1.2 oz)
- 1 Tbsp of Cocoa Powder
- Place all ingredients into a high powered blender and blend until smooth.
- If you’re feeling extra crazy feel free to top with some extra almond butter.
Want more smoothies? (Yeah, ya do!)
Your Turn:
- What’s your favorite breakfast to have on the weekends?
Smoothie bowlz for days, unless at brunch where I usually opt for eggs or something savory
- Almond butter or peanut butter? (or am I insane for even asking?)
Sorry peebs, I’m team a-buttz

I am officially an almond butter lover now. Couldn’t have said that a year ago!!! I’ve been on an almond milk-kick lately too. This looks SO good!
Chocolate + Almond butter in a smoothie?! Say no more, I’m in!
Right?! I can’t believe I hadn’t done this earlier.
ahhhhhhhh this smoothie is what I call perfection! Making this asap!
It’s so easy too! Let me know how it goes 😀
Almond butter or PB? What about cashew and sunflower….o and hemp seed, pecan, pumpkin…..AH! No way I could never pick!
Excellent points! All nut/seed butters deserve love <3
Please come live with me and make me smoothies everyday thanks
Packing my bag and my blender oh and plenty of cocoa powder 😀
Totally adding cocoa powder into my smoothie tomorrow morning. This sounds magnificent!
Let me know what you think!
If you do, let me know how it goes!
One word. HEAVEN. If I’m having a smoothie for breakfast I always need something that’s a little on the thicker side to keep me full longer. The protein powder and almond butter do the trick! This sounds PERF. Definitely on my breakfast list this week.
Exxaaactly – for AM smoothies I like them to be nice and “hearty” (if you can call a smoothie hearty)
Totes agree! I added cocoa powder to my blueberry smoothie this AM. Perfection.
You’re right about the protein powder thing. Honestly, chocolate protein powder always tastes sort of fake to me! I have to add cocoa powder to it or it’s too sweet tasting. If that makes sense?
Simple and delicious 🙂 love it!
omg this looks heavenly! I really need to try cacao powder. I wonder if adding some chocolate would have the same effect?
I’ve been using cacao and cocoa powders interchangeably, both are delish!
Almond butter + chocolate = a match made in heaven! Loveeee the banana base. The texture looks amazing! As far as weekend breakfasts go, I love oatmeal, pancakes and big, thick smoothie bowls. Really I love those things any day of the week, the weekends just make it easier to have them from a time standpoint! And I don’t think I can choose between almond and peanut butter – I love them both dearly!
I’m definitely on the same page about weekend breakfasts – they’re just so much more leisurely so you have the time to enjoy and digest delicious meals.
ALMOND BUTTER alllll the way. And no need to give me reasons why this looks delicious..I was sold by the title and the first photo 🙂
xoxo Sarah Grace, Fresh Fit N Healthy.
Aww thanks dear! The chocolate did all the work for me <3
Any idea what the calories or nutritional information might be?
This sounds and looks absolutely delicious, and as you say, chocolate + almond butter is always a winner. Just one question though: Are you using cocoa powder (as stated throughout your explanations and in the ingredient list), or cacao powder (as pictured). They’re not the same thing, and I’m going to go with the cocoa powder while waiting for your reply since I already have that on hand. Just wondering though…
I look forward to trying this smoothie. What type of Chocolate Protein Powder did you use?
I love kachava brand and vega protein powders
