Simple Green Juice You Can Make Without a Juicer

February 1, 2016 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Make this simple, refreshing green juice combo without breaking the bank or dealing with the hassle of using a juicer.

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “green juice?” If we’re being totally honest, when I hear the words “green juice” think of pretentious ladies in activewear paying $10 for something that looks pretty, but tastes like dirt and trying to tell me it makes them feel “alive.”

Most green juices are usually one of two things. Either they’re marketed as healthy but packed with sugar from having too many fruits like mangos, bananas or apples or they’re pure veggies and are quite an acquired taste.

But then I went and got myself hooked on green juice and realized that I was being a total hypocrite. While I still believe the health claims are a little overhyped, fresh pressed green juices can actually be quite delicious, refreshing and still healthy with the right combination of ingredients. Juices definitely should not replace normal consumption of whole greens which have the benefit of fibre and more nutrients than a pressed juice, but as a self admitted beverage lover they are a great addition to a healthy diet.

I had a lot of fun tasting a variety of different brands and flavors while I was traveling last month. I found that the ones that struck a nice balance between earthy sweetness and veggie goodness could be both healthy and enjoyable. However there’s still that nagging problem… the $8 price tag for a single beverage. Sure once in a while it’s ok to splurge, but if you want to enjoy green juice even semi-regularly it’s a huge price to pay.

So I wondered, “Could I make an even better blend at home?….Without a juicer?” I had used a juicer in the past and they’re expensive and a pain in the ass to clean. So I busted out some cheese cloth (which are available at most grocery stores) and my handy dandy magic bullet and ka-pow, the green juices were a-flowin’.

I used a combination that I found was the right balance of green and palatable with only 1 small apple to sweeten the 3-serving mix. In the end I ended up spending less than $4 for 3 servings of juice which is a huge savings plus you know it’s as fresh as they come.

So yes, in the end I’m definitely a lot less judgmental about green juice drinkers, because heck I guess I am one. But now I can enjoy it on the cheap and I won’t lie it’s pretty fun to make!

Ingredients
  • 2 Cups of Spinach
  • 1 Cucumber Sliced
  • 3 Stalks of Celery Chopped
  • 1/2 a lemon’s juice squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger chopped
  • 1 small apple sliced

Prefer kale… while spinach is a good coloring agent for the juice it is not much else.

I still need to get cheese cloth.. I think you know but I LOVE green juice. It’s a feel-good drink, especially after a night out.

So true! It really is a feel good drink especially when you’re having trouble getting your greens in.

I couldn’t love this more! First of all, you are so dead on when saying green juice is usually laden with sugar or an acquired taste. I feel like the only way to get the right balance is if you made them at home, but who can afford a juicer?! Even if I could, I definitely wouldn’t have space for it so this is beyond perfect.

      February 3, 2016 at 8:56 pm

Totally, plus sometimes it takes trying a couple (which I did at the expense of my hard earned cash) to find that perfect balance. I usually like to make sure there’s either some kind of citrus or ginger to make the juice palatable if it isn’t full o’ sugar.

I’m so glad you posted this! I love juice and have a juicer I used to use all the time, but I now ain’t got time for that so it essentially collects dust. I will definitely need to do this! Then I can sip green juice like its my job (aka..I totally wish it was…I need to figure out how to land that gig…)

      February 3, 2016 at 8:55 pm

Haha when you land it let me know cuz I’d definitely apply.

I have a juicer and I rarely bust it out. It’s just so big compared to my Vita! I love how simple this juice is…and how gorgeous the pictures are! I tend to drink most of my juices in the spring and summer months with teas, coffees and cocoas taking over in the colder months. This drink makes me want to get back to juicing though! So fresh and so green! 😉

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      February 3, 2016 at 8:54 pm

Thank you so much Kat! I could definitely see myself juicing a lot more often during the summer just to stay hydrated and refreshed.

Using a juicer always sounded like a pain in the butt to me since it would require so much clean up, but THIS is so much easier and the green juice looks delicious! Definitely need to try this out!

      February 3, 2016 at 8:54 pm

Totally, even though it’s a bit of a hack it’s actually super simple and kinda fun too.

Love green juice. Ginger really is the magic ingredient to making green juice actually taste good. I add TONS of it to my green drinks. I can’t wait to try this recipe 🙂

What a great idea to use a cheese cloth to get that fresh pressed effect without the price. PS no idea why it’s called cheese cloth..maybe that’s just me!

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      February 3, 2016 at 8:52 pm

Hahah I was totally wondering that as I used it. I think they use to make cheese by squeezing out the milk and keeping the curds but I could be wrong.

Genius!!! Pics are SO beautiful. Sometimes I just crave a refreshing green juice (but not the $10 hole in my wallet). Thankfully we have an old juicer at home that I bust out every now and then. I don’t even sweeten in – I love adding lemons, and then I can stand the taste.

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      February 3, 2016 at 8:52 pm

Yup! A ‘lil lemon and ginger can do some magic to spinach and celery.

Holy moly this is amazing! Your pictures are gorgeous and this whole concept is genius! I always thought using a juicer was annoying, but this method seems really fun! I actually have something to do with those darn cheese cloths that are sitting around my kitchen.

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      February 3, 2016 at 8:51 pm

Yes! I had a juicer but ended up selling it because it was such a pain in the butt to clean. This method is surprisingly easier in the long run. Also thank you so much. That means a lot coming from someone who always takes gorgeous photos.

What an awesome hack! Next time I am at the store I am going to pick up some cheese cloth so I can try this. Going to juice places is so tempting and so bad for my wallet!

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

Ooo I know I would be so temped if I had a good juice place around me.

  18. Emily says

You’re pretty innovative Georgie! 🙂 My system, so far, hasn’t needed as much green juice, but it would probably be good for me to drink some more often than I do.

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      February 3, 2016 at 8:48 pm

It’s one of those things where if you like it, drink it, but you can survive without. I just realized that I couldn’t stand paying so much when it was easy enough to do myself.

Not sure I love green juice, and I can never spend the large sum on it because it just tastes bleh to me, but if I can home make it without a juicer, I’m sold!! This looks so refreshing!

Thanks Angela! <3 Yes the pulp has so much of the good stuff which is why smoothies are my go-to but sometimes a little "clear-er" juice can be nice too.
