What I Ate Wednesday – My Spring Challenge

March 23, 2016 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Birds be chirpin’, the sun is starting to stick around, flowers are cautiously poking out of the ground, my friends, as of last Sunday, spring is o-ficially here. I don’t like to hate on any seasons, but let’s be real, I’m pumped as hell that a certain season (that shall remain nameless) is over.

One of my favorite parts of spring is that it’s a season full of excitement and new beginnings. You can smell it in the air. Jackets start getting lighter, coffees starting getting iced. When you grow up in such a seasonal tourist driven economy, like Nantucket, seasons are a big flippin’ deal. A majority of island businesses make over 80% of their income in 4 months then after hustling their asses off, they all pretty much hibernate for the winter. Come spring time we’re all pretty ready to get back into the craziness that is summer.

For me, spring feels like a much better time to start a new good habit or kick an old one to the curb. There’s something really powerful in a season change especially when it’s all about growth. Right now spring feels like an awesome time to focus my energy into a habit I’ve been slowly cultivating, challenging my introversion. That means saying yes to invitations when I’d rather be reading or blogging. Staring conversations with acquaintances, instead of avoiding eye contact. Practicing small talk when I’d rather just nod and smile. Obviously I have to respect my need for alone time, but that’s never been a problem for me.

You might be the opposite, as an extrovert, maybe it’s time to focus on finding some more “me time” when you’re more comfortable in crowds. Try finding an activity you can do alone that helps you listen to yourself and your own needs. Either way, take this opportunity of the changing seasons to see how you can expand your awesomeness outside your comfort zone, while still respecting your nature.

Your Turn:

  • What spring changes get you most excited?
  • Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

I describe myself more as introvert person, but I love hang out with my friends and talk with strangers once in awhile. As for me, the most amazing change in spring that`s snow melt and you can see green grass. Oh, and sun start warming us again 😉

I just love the feel of spring and that everyone is generally happier when the weather is nice. I feel like spring is such a more positive time of the year since summer comes right after. Plus I get excited since my birthday is in may too!

Ooo exciting! Birthday months are the best. I almost love the feeling of anticipation more than the actual event/season itself!

I love that it stays lighter longer! Being able to take a walk after dinner is so nice 🙂 And I’m totally an extrovert so I love the extra amount of activities that come with Spring & Summer! 😉

Haha I’m slowly trying to dip my toes in loving the extra activities 😀

That raspberry rice cake….genius! So pretty. I love the feeling of spring (Easter signifies that for me). I like the heat but this time in FL is just perfect.

Oh I can imagine the shoulder seasons in FL are so lovely

The color of the raspberries on your rice cake is really stunning and pretty! Hmm… I would say I’ve become more of a ‘introverted extrovert.’ I’ve been learning the meaning of being ‘slow to speak, quick to listen’ for a long time, because I was SO bad at it for so many years. Thankful that my Heavenly Father will complete that good work in me. I haven’t had oats in a jar in SO long.

I also LOVE spring. It’s one of my favorite seasons. It comes kind of in spurts here in Colorado. Right now we have a crazy blizzard outside, but yesterday it was 65+ degrees. O_O God made a really unique world.

Love the idea of challenging yourself during the new season. Being an introvert myself, I think it is great to try to say yes more or accept more invitations to social outings. You should check out Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes – it is all about her year of saying yes more to things that scare her. Such a good read.

Side note but my aunt and uncle live in Nantucket and my grandparents are renting a house there this summer so I’ll be spending a LOT of time visiting. Aka can we please hang out if you’re on the island?! Kay thanks.

I would say that I’m normally an extrovert, but I definitely enjoy my along time! I tend to hibernate during the winter as well..especially this winter since I’m saving up for a house 🙂 I’m just about ready to break out and be more social this spring and summer!

Congrats! What an amazing goal. That’s gonna feel so good to see all the saving pay off.

I can relate so much with that! I am hoping to really reach out to people and make plans instead of waiting for people to make them with me and not always saying yes when I do get invited!

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      March 23, 2016 at 5:00 pm

We can totally do this Hilary – my fear is always that I’ll “lose time” that i could be working on a project, but I have to remember that social time can be super valuable for productivity in the end

Great post! As an extrovert, I definitely could use some more focus on alone time or at least time doing what I actually want to do. I love that spring cultivates all these feelings of change and new beginnings. So happy to see flowers coming up!

    • Georgie @ The Long Run says

      March 23, 2016 at 4:58 pm

I’m sure it can be tough to carve out that time, but that little bit of discomfort at first is totally worth it in the end. Yay flowers!

Also, that bagel looks incredible. I couldn’t have stopped at half!

There’s nothing better than that feeling of spring and that first day you get to go out in just your light jean jacket. There’s such a unique smell that comes with it all. Very nostalgic.
I’m a complete introvert, so I am challenging myself to the exact things you mentioned. It always feels so good when I do, so I need to continually remind myself of this.

YUM! Looks like such a great day of eats! And I love your challenge! I hear ya girl. I’m like half introverted/ half extroverted… but I feel like when life gets super busy (classes, school, work, church, etc). I just want to be alone in my free time! But lately I’ve been trying to push myself to stay social and say yes to invitations to do fun things! So lets do this girlie!!
    xoxo Cailee!

Those overnight oats! Yum! I’m a mix between an introvert and extrovert I think. I definitely love my “me time” but I also crave social interaction and enjoy spending my weekends with friends hiking, trying new restaurants, or just going to the beach. I think one thing I am going to work on this spring is being more active outside of my comfort zone community by going to work meetups, more local events/conferences, or inviting other local bloggers to grab a cup of coffee.

Ahhhh spring is the best for so many reasons – my birthday (20 this year! woo!), the end of school, fresh produce & farmers’ markets, the weather, and everything is just happier. My goal for every season is to just relax sometimes and take some time for myself, so that’s definitely continuing into spring.
Side note: which veggie chicken brand is that??

I love the yellow flowers that grow on bushes that bloom in the spring! Once I see those I am excited that spring is coming. However, with New England weather you can never be too sure!
