How to Spice Up Your Next Date Night in the Kitchen

July 15, 2016 by Georgie @ The Long Run

Spice up your next date night with a new recipe and less stress by using HelloFresh

How to Spice Up Your Next Date Night in the Kitchen

Routines can be incredibly helpful when you’re in a busy season of life. They make decision making almost effortless. However, that in itself is a bit of a double edge sword. Without decisions you don’t have any of the stress and energy that comes with them, but you also don’t get the variety and excitement that come with doing something new.

That’s why for today’s final collaboration with HelloFresh, the healthy meal delivery service, I wanted to talk about spicing up something that should always be fun: date night.

Deciding what you want to do for dinner every night, and even on date nights, can feel like an endless loop of “I don’t know, what do you feel like?” Which typically ends in going back to the same places, same go-to staples because neither one of you wants to have to make “the big decision.”

I’ve totally been there. I actually hate making choices for anyone outside myself. As soon as I have to decide for a group, even a group of two, I get paralyzed. I think that everyone will hard core judge me, if I make the wrong choice. However, as I’ve gotten a bit older (yup, I’m turning the ripe old age of 24 in a mere 2 weeks) I’ve learned that I’m not alone in this. Most people don’t love making decisions for groups, so if you can be the decider, that takes a load of anxiety off everyone’s shoulders.

And yes, that even includes dinners and date nights.

But if striking out and making bold date-night dinner choices still seems like a bit of a stretch, especially if you’re new(ish) in the kitchen, then HelloFresh is that perfect middle ground. Each box is sent with 3 meals that contain all the ingredients you’ll need, plus step by step instructions for how to make each meal.

Personally, I think practicing a new skill, like cooking, and working to create something new (and delicious) together, is one of the best kind of date nights. I’ve had some of the best memories and truest belly laugh playing around in the kitchen. There’s something really special about sharing a nice meal with your dude (or gal), especially one you worked hard on. Another bonus of cooking the different recipes from HelloFresh is, you’re getting inspiration for future meals. My own arsenal of “go-to” ideas has definitely expanded since trying HelloFresh.

I shared these portobello mushroom burgers with my guy and he loved ‘em. Even though I’m a veggie and he’s an omnivore, he didn’t miss the meat at all. The flavorful chipotle, meaty portobello and creamy avocado made for such a satisfying meal, one that we’ll totally do again.

“Date-nights” don’t have to be limited to significant others either. I have the same dilemma of “where do we wanna go?” “what do we wanna eat” when I’m with my friends. And just like a great date night, adding some variety can help make new special memories with all your favorite peeps.

I love dressing up and going out for a nice dinner and sitting at the bar with my ROCK STAR girlfriends! It’s fun to put on clothes other than Lululemon and rock a dress and makeup and just laugh, eat, and drink the night away!

This is a great idea! I do something similar for a fun date night, but instead of using a meal service we each pick a recipe on Pinterest that we want to try. It’s fun to go grocery shopping together and prepping the meal. These burgers look great though!

Such a fun idea – my fiancée and I both love cooking and being in the kitchen together trying a new recipe can be more fun and less expensive than just going out to eat.

Those portobello burgers look SO DAMN GOOD. For date nights where we feel like staying in, my boyfriend and I like to cook together. He usually takes care of the protein and I take care of the veggie and the dessert 😉 When we feel like going out we love trying new restaurants or a different cuisine. We LOVE Indian food!

I’ve never had a portobello burger. I’m not a huge mushroom person, but these do look really good. Does your boy friend like portobellos? 🙂 And I totally agree that having a routine/being spontaneous is a balance when it comes to doing meals for friends and family!

I remember the first time I had a portobello burger and I was so impressed with the texture and how awesome it was! Drew is super outdoorsy (and I like being outside too) so anything that gets us outside is awesome. Love the summertime for bike rides and kayaking!
